What do the Numbers Mean?
#2 -    A medium soft reed. Recommended for most beginners.
#2.5 - Slightly harder (stiffer) than #2. Affords better tone, but requires more muscular   development than #2's. Recommended for 2nd year players.
#3   - Medium Hard reed. Again, better tonal color. For more advanced players.
The harder reeds beyond become a matter of the personal preference of the more advanced players. Try different strengths and reed types to establish your favorite.
