What do the Numbers mean?
#2 -    A Medium Soft Reed. Recommended for most Beginners.
#2.5 - Slightly harder (stiffer) than #2. Affords better tone, but requires more muscular
            development than #2's. Recommended for 2nd year players.
#3 -   Mediu hard reed. Again, better tonal color. For more advanced players.

The harder reeds beyond #3 become a matter of the personal preference or the more advanced players. At this point, the player usually is trying different mouthpieces, and the strength of the reed will be greatly influenced by the shape of the new mouthpiece. A lot of trial is needed of both mouthpieces and reed strength and styles to establish your voice.
