Saxophone

Getting Started

So your student has decided to join the school band and wants to play the saxophone! We here at Bronstein Music can help!

Instrument Purchases

The simplest way to secure an instrument for your student is to purchase one. While it may be tempting to look online and purchase a very inexpensive instrument, we highly discourage this. Many of these low-cost instruments can have many problems and it might cause frustration for your student, leading them to abandon their musical journey. Here at Bronstein Music, we only select tried and tested brands that our staff, BMS teachers, and local school teachers have approved.

The brands we carry for saxophone rentals are purchases are Image, Jupiter, and Yamaha.

We do have new saxes in stock and limited stock of used instruments. Please call for pricing and availability.

Instrument Rentals

Interested in doing a rental instead? We can do that too!

Rent-To-Own Program

Alto Saxophones are a rent-to-own instrument and can rent from $39.50 to $55 per month. Tenor Saxes rent from $55 to $69 per month. Baritone saxophones are usually a rent-to-rent instrument and start at $85. We do not rent soprano saxes.

We have new and used saxophones available for rent! While it may be tempting to rent a shiny new sax for your student, our used clarinets are a great option as well! We offer a discounted rent-to-own price on used instruments and every previously-loved sax we rent has gone through our repair shop. They are serviced, cleaned, and the mouthpiece is sterilized and ready to be played by your student.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should my student rent an alto, tenor, or baritone saxophone? What are the differences?

Saxophones come in several different sizes; the most common size people start with is the alto. Alto is usually the smallest size in the band, followed by the larger tenor, and very large (almost 4 feet tall!) baritone. Alto and bari saxes are pitched in Eb and tenor saxes are pitched in Bb. Usually in a school advanced band there are many altos, 2-5 tenors, and 1 baritone. School students should usually start on an alto. If your student would like to start on tenor or baritone, please let us know and we can advise you if it is a good choice for them.

If my student rents/buys an alto, will I need to change to a tenor next year?

In the vast majority of cases, no - the alto is not a “step-up” instrument to the tenor sax. Some students will transition to the tenor or baritone after a few years of playing as the needs of a band change (not necessary in beginning band, but very important in concert bands and wind ensembles). There is usually a transition period to learn the new instruments as well. Even though they are all saxophones and are very similar - they are individual instruments!

What if my student really wants a new saxophone after we rent a used one?

No worries! We can apply up to six months of your rental credit toward the purchase of a brand new instrument. This only applies if you start your rental with a used instrument.

What do you provide with the rental?

We provide one reed to get you started, a swab to clean the interior of the instrument, and cork grease. We recommend you purchase a pack of at least three reeds for your class. The case is included as well.

Can I only do a rent-to-rent?

Alto and tenor saxes are automatically rent-to-own and you are under no obligation whatsoever to rent it to term. You can return the instrument anytime after the initial three month minimum. Baritone saxophones are a rent-to-rent instrument.

Do you have the book/stand/accessory that we need?

Yes! We have the most popular band books for our area, along with music stands, reeds, and everything else on your list.
